From Prep to Platter: Easy Ways to Entertain This Season

Warmer days are here, which means more time outside, longer afternoons around the table and plenty of reasons to invite a few people over.

The best part? Entertaining doesn’t have to mean spending hours preparing an elaborate meal. Sometimes all you need is good food, a beautiful spread and the right serveware to bring everything together.

Here are a few simple ways to make entertaining feel effortless this season.

1. Build a Grazing Spread

There’s a reason grazing tables and charcuterie boards have become such a favourite.

They’re relaxed, easy to prepare and allow everyone to help themselves throughout the afternoon.

Start with a wooden serving board or platter and build your spread with a mixture of:

  • Cheeses

  • Crackers and fresh bread

  • Biltong or cured meats

  • Fresh and dried fruit

  • Nuts

  • Olives and preserves

There’s no need to make it perfectly symmetrical. In fact, a relaxed arrangement often looks even better.

Add a few smaller wooden bowls and serving plates around the main board for dips, olives, nuts and other little extras.

2. Mix Boards, Bowls & Plates

Everything doesn’t need to match.

Combining different shapes and sizes creates a table that feels relaxed and inviting.

Use a large wooden platter as your centrepiece, smaller boards for cheese or snacks and individual wooden bowls and plates for the finishing touches.

The natural grain of Acacia wood brings warmth to the table and makes even simple food feel a little more special.

3. Prep and Serve with the Same Pieces

Less washing up? We’re listening.

Choose pieces that can move easily from kitchen prep to the table.

Chop, slice and prepare ingredients on a wooden board, then turn it into part of your serving setup once the food is ready.

A good wooden board isn't something that needs to disappear into the cupboard once the chopping is done. Let it become part of the table.

4. Keep the Menu Simple

Good entertaining isn't about cooking ten different dishes.

Choose a few things people genuinely enjoy and serve them well.

Fresh bread with dips, a beautiful cheese board, seasonal fruit, something straight off the braai and a few small snacks can easily become a complete spread.

When the food is simple, everyone - including the host - actually gets to enjoy the gathering.

5. Take It Outside

Spring and summer entertaining belongs outdoors.

Set up under the patio, pack a picnic, move lunch into the garden or light the braai as the afternoon cools down.

Wooden serveware works beautifully for relaxed outdoor entertaining because it brings a warm, natural element to the setting without making things feel overly formal.

Add your favourite drinks, a few comfortable chairs and good company.

That's really all you need.

Made for More Than the Kitchen

At My Butchers Block, we believe wooden kitchenware should be used, not hidden away.

From chopping and preparing to grazing, serving and sharing, our pieces are designed to become part of the moments that happen around food.

Because ultimately, it's not only about what's on the board.

It's about who's gathered around it.

Shop the My Butchers Block Serveware Collection and get your table ready for the season of sharing.
